Coinciding with the last weekend of April, the Spring Fair is one of the most important heritage festivals in Martorell’s festive calendar.
The origins of the Spring Fair date back to the 15th century. In 1422, Queen Maria, wife of Alfonso the Magnanimous, promoted various initiatives to boost trade in Catalonia. As Martorell was an important crossroads, she granted, on 23 March 1422, the privilege to hold a fair on Saint Mark’s Day and the four following days. For this reason, the event was originally known as Saint Marc Fair.
Over the centuries, the Spring Fair has evolved: from a livestock and agricultural fair into a celebration that also includes a craft market in the historic centre of La Vila. Today, many of the activities take place in the Ca n’Oliveres venue.
The programme offers activities for all audiences: a craft market, a commercial and motor fair, a livestock fair, open days, exhibitions, concerts, leisure areas and the traditional pulling contest. In addition, it is a great showcase for design enthusiasts, who can present their talent through the traditional Spring Fair poster competition.
