ITINERARY THROUGH LA VILA

Itinerary through La Vila, Via Augusta Trail

Martorell offers a wide range of possibilities to enjoy the historic heritage and the natural surroundings, either on foot or by bicycle.

The city lies along the Camí de Sant Jaume route, which connects Barcelona with the Montserrat mountain. It has good connections by both private and public transport, linking Barcelona, Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Anoia, and Alt Penedès via three FGC stations (Martorell-Vila, Martorell-Enllaç, and Martorell-Central), Rodalies de Catalunya, and several bus lines. In addition, it has establishments offering visitors quality accommodation and dining.

La Vila itinerary starts at Santa Maria Church and continues in a straight line along Francesc Santacana Street, Plaça de la Vila, Anselm Clavé and Pere Puig, until reaching the Devil’s Bridge. If you arrive by train, you can choose to follow it in the opposite direction from the Martorell-Vila station. This route coincides with the Way of Saint James; therefore, on the ground you will find the typical shells indicating the direction.

In just over a kilometer, you can admire a great diversity of architectural styles: from the Roman Pont del Diable to the Gothic Casa Gausa or the Chapel of Sant Joan; from the Neoclassicism of Can Nicolau to the Modernism of Francesc Santacana Street and the Noucentisme of the Casa de la Vila; not forgetting the sgraffito houses on Pere Puig Street and the Plaza de la Vila or the Café del Progrés.

The duration of the walk may vary if you visit any of the town’s three museums. The Muxart, Espai d’Art i Creació Contemporanis hosts a selection of works by the Martorell artist Jaume Muxart (check opening hours). L’Enrajolada – Casa Museu Santacana preserves an eclectic collection of tiles from the 14th to the 20th centuries, ceramic pieces, architectural elements, furniture and paintings. Finally, the Museu Vicenç Ros is located in the former 17th-century Capuchin Convent, where compositions of Catalan tiles, hunting panels and an important ethnological collection are exhibited. Visits to the latter two museums are guided and must be booked in advance (tel. 93 774 22 23).

On this itinerari per la Vila, you can discover the most representative buildings of the historic centre, although not the only ones. Throughout the route, you will find sgraffito façades, so we recommend completing the experience with the sgraffito itinerary.
